The Ultimate 15 Days — North To West

Arrival at Kualanamu International Airport. Meet your private guide driver,  Immediately board a private vehicle to travel to the quiet village of Tangkahan, located on the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park. Driving time is roughly 4.5 to 5 hours. The final 20 km consists of unpaved, uneven dirt tracks through oil palm plantations where a sturdy vehicle is necessary. Check into a riverside eco-lodge, enjoy a traditional North Sumatran meal, and relax to the sounds of the surrounding rainforest. All accommodations in Tangkahan are guesthouses at the best breathtaking with the surrounding jungle, simple, good clean with own bathroom. No warm water is available. 2 overnight stays in Tangkahan.

Day 2 : Tangkahan River & Elephant Experience

Spend a full day immersed in the hidden rainforest enclave of Tangkahan. Join local mahouts for a eco-friendly "Walk with the Elephants" session, accompanying semi-wild rescued Sumatran elephants through their natural habitat. Embark on a river tubing trip down the clear Buluh River, stopping at a natural hot spring bubbling up along the riverbank and swimming under a jungle waterfall. 

Transfer overland across the plantation belt to Bukit Lawang, the main gateway for Sumatran orangutan sightings. Expect a 2.5 to 3-hour journey over bumpy rural tracks. Arrive at your lodge situated along the Bahorok River. Spend the remaining hours walking around the village, crossing its wooden suspension bridges, and relaxing at a riverside cafe. 

Day 4 : Tangkahan to Bukit Lawang

Day 5 : Orangutan Trekking & Transit to Berastagi

Dive deep into Gunung Leuser National Park before heading into the Karo Highlands. Embark on a 3- to 4-hour guided jungle trek to observe semi-wild Sumatran Orangutans, Thomas's leaf monkeys, and exotic birds. Return to the lodge via river tubing down the Bahorok River rapids. Drive approximately 4 hours up into the cool mountain town of Berastagi. Arrive in Berastagi, check in, and enjoy the cool highland climate.

Day 6 : Volcanic Peaks, Berastagi & Karo Culture

Explore Sunrise Hike (Optional): Take an early morning hike up Mount Sibayak (approx. 2 hours up) to witness sulfur steam vents and views over the valley. Shwedagon pagoda Replica at Taman Alam Lumbini in Berastagi it’s a Buddhist temple with serene, harmonious place with beautiful nature surrounding it. the volcanic landscapes and Batak Karo heritage of Berastagi also the colorful Berastagi Fruit Market. 

Day 3 : Tangkahan — Jungle Trekking in Gunung Leuser National Park

Start for a 6–7-hour jungle trekking in Gunung Leuser National Park to see the wildlife. This involves a walk through the jungle to explore the park. Steep, slopes, and dense vegetation will bring you the excitement of the rainforest. During the trekking, you’ll come across a wide variety of plants, towering trees, spot the orangutan and other wildlife

Day 7 : Berastagi – Lake Toba – Samosir Island

Morning, heading to Lake Toba – surrounded by mountains, this spot is a peaceful place to relax. The ancient King’s Palace of Batak Simalungun as known as Rumah Bolon. Arrive in Parapat, a town on the shore of Serene Lake Toba from where you cross over the lake to the island of Samosir for an hour by ferry. Overnight stay on Samosir island for 2 nights, room at lake side.

Day 8 : Samosir Island Tour

Samosir Island is a volcanic island located in the middle of Lake Toba and is considered the cultural center of the Toba Batak people. Visit Tomok Village to see the tomb of King Sidabutar. You can explore other cultural sites on the island, such as the stone chairs in Ambarita, which may have once served as a tribal court. Also see a traditional Batak dance at the cultural center in Simanindo. Then back to hotel.

Day 9 : Samosir Island - Lake Toba – Sipirok

Breakfast in hotel then drive to Lake Port. Depart for Padang Sidempuan, drive along the southern shores of Lake Toba with its rice fields and Batak kings’ graves through the Toba highlands. You may also stop at the bank of Sarulla river near the nice view of the rice terrace where you can take a short walk. Overnight stay in Sipirok.

Day 10 : Sipirok – Bukittinggi Minangkabau

Leave Sipirok for Bukittinggi the Minangkabau highlands brings you again right through the Bukit Barisan mountain ridge of Sumatra drive through a wall of tropical rain forests. Sihepeng to see the attraction of monkey picking up the coconut, observe pepper, vanilla, cardamom and cinnamon garden. Passing rain tropical forest of Rimba Panti and crossing the equator line at Bonjol. Arrive at Bukittinggi the charming town of Minangkabau tribe. 2 overnight stays in Bukittinggi.

Day 11 : Bukittinggi Landmarks & Sianok Canyon

Discover historical landmarks of Bukittinggi and Panorama Park overlooking the Sianok Canyon (Ngarai Sianok). Explore the historical Lubang Jepang (Japanese wartime tunnels) or take a walk down into the canyon valley. The mysterious lake Maninjau, descending to the lake via the road with 44 curves. The villages themselves are small and great for escaping the hectic pace of the city. After enjoying the panorama, we are heading back to Bukittinggi and dropping you off at the hotel.

Day 12 : Minangkabau Heritage - Harau

Distinct architectural traditions of the Minangkabau people. Continue to the town of Batusangkar to explore the majestic Istano Basa Pagaruyung. This grand, multi-tiered royal palace is a masterclass in traditional timber engineering, featuring dramatic, sweeping roofs shaped like buffalo horns and intricate hand-carved floral reliefs covering the exterior. Drive east to the stunning Harau Valley, where massive, vertical granite cliffs tower hundreds of meters over bright green, flooded rice paddies. Check in to the homestay. 2 overnight stays in Harau.

Day 13 : Harau Trekking To Waterfall

Make some walks in Haray valley by seeing the dramatic landscape with towering cliffs rising above picturesque rice paddies dotted with slender coconut trees. A few cascades concentrated in a single area which is very convenient.  Sarasah Bunta Waterfall is the most popular. It’s an impressive cascade spilling over a huge cliff into a pool beneath, and the whole area is drenched in water and rocks covered in most. Follow the trail to the second waterfall. It’s smaller, but there is a nice shallow pool with inflatables and deck chairs. And following the trail even further is another part where there is a zipline crossing over a pool. It’s short, not even 100 meters, but fun, nonetheless. Back to the lodge.

Day 14 : HARAU – PADANG

Hereafters continue to drive to Padang via the beautiful Anai valley with the Anai waterfall. Arrive in Padang, Check in your hotel, free program. 

Your private driver is available to serve on that day until 09h00. Extra charges for another hours.

Day 15 : The Last Day in PADANG

Breakfast and preparing your luggages to transfer to the Padang's Airport. End of Sumatra Travel Package.
